Sheffield United Reappoint Chris Wilder as Manager in Bold U-Turn

Sheffield United have reappointed Chris Wilder as head coach, marking his third spell with the club, just 89 days after his dismissal. The announcement, confirmed by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano on Monday, September 15, 2025, comes after the sacking of Rubén Sellés, who lasted only three months following a winless start to the Championship season. Sellés’ tenure ended with five consecutive defeats, leaving the Blades bottom of the table with a single goal scored.
Wilder, 57, has signed a contract until summer 2027, returning to Bramall Lane to lead the team against Charlton this Saturday. His previous stints saw the club rise from League One to a ninth-place Premier League finish in 2019/20. Last season, he guided United to 92 points, though they fell short of automatic promotion.
The decision follows the club’s ownership change to American group COH Sports in late 2024, replacing Saudi-based United World. Reports suggest discussions are underway for former owner Prince Abdullah to return in an advisory role. Sky Sports notes Wilder’s rehiring aims to stabilize the squad and push for promotion, leveraging his deep understanding of the club’s dynamics amidst ongoing transitions.
